Among other places, I learned about Erotic Crystallization Inertia (ECI) through the Temple of Set. It also featured prominently in Anton LaVey’s The Devil’s Notebook. If you are unaware of how this magic works, but would like to resolve some of your feelings about an event from the past, ECI might be in order.
“If only I could return to the past to [fill-in the blank].” Have you ever asked yourself that question? I have. While in some ways you can ‘go back’ to the ‘past’, let’s leave that for another article. This one talks about bringing the past forward, to where you are now.

While you cannot change an event from the past, you may be able to change how you feel about that event. And that’s the eternal part, right? That’s what lives on.
Years ago I was at one of many annual international gatherings of magicians I’ve attended. This one was in Las Vegas. The day after an event-wide ritual that I had written and attended, I was sitting at a bar in a casino with someone I called my Brother. Amn and I were as close and intimate as any family member might be. I was telling him that while busy facilitating the ritual with my co-Celebrant, I did not get to experience my ECI moment. I pulled out a photo to show him. I was going to use it in the ritual. Then: bam! I experienced my ECI moment. It flooded into my consciousness. I was very emotional. He wasn’t surprised.
I am not as clear as I perhaps should be on why “Erotic” is the first word in this kind of magic, though I have my theories about that. What I am clearer about is why “Crystallization” and “Inertia” are there. One can crystalize a moment in time, then recall it. You may or may not have done that (the crystallization) purposefully; but you certainly can. You then overcome the universe’s power of inertia in this kind of ritual.
The short take on what such a ritual does, this magical act, is that it presses the Reset Button for you. You re-experience the past, but in the present moment. That is huge: you bring everything to bear that you are now when as replay that past moment. Your present-day wisdom, understanding, maturity, and a whole lot of other things are brought to bear as you experience the emotionality—albeit, anew, fresh—in today’s world. If it was regret or fear or loathing you had etched in your brain and mind, well, during an ECI Moment you have a chance of rewriting that script. Perhaps you have been unable to do that up to now. If it was a lovely moment, perhaps an erotic moment—eroticism does not need to be limited to sexuality—you can fully, and again, Indulge in that moment. You can re-impress it on your psyche. You have the chance, through ECI, to re-experience the past from today’s perspective with the goal of either having a living memory of it, or of eradicating negative feelings about it.
Are you ready to experience your ECI moment?
Step 1. Assemble in your ritual Working space as many magical accoutrements as possible that speak to the past event you want to revisit. Example: photographs (physical or electronic), the music of the day, clothing, books, incense or perfume or cologne, documents, and so forth.
Step 2. Begin your magical ritual in the usual way.
Step 3. As you move into the ECI component, either recite text you have earlier prepared, or simply wing it. Begin (if you hadn’t already) to immerse yourself fully and completely in the environment of the past that you have recreated. Live it, smell it, breath it, drink it, experience it.
Step 4. Before you conclude with the previous step, make a statement. Make it powerful. Make sure it’s genuine. Make sure it includes your objective or goal. What do you want from this? Here’s the sample statement I was going to use in ritual in Las Vegas, which had to do with a former lover and partner, and a trip we had taken years before. My goal appears in the last two sentences:
“I am happy. It’s mid-January, snowing out. I’m driving to a getaway lodge with my lover and partner. Saga is on the radio. We’re in love. We’ll spend an amazing, hot, weekend together. I’m in my twenties and there’s so much love and life ahead of me, ahead of us. I will remember the excitement I felt from these exciting moments together. I will remember I will always be a part of her.”
Step 5. End Step 4 as you feel appropriate. End the ritual. Walk away…
ECI Workings can be powerful, poignant, and even practical.
Let’s say you want to rewrite a script about job-hunting. Further, that script or Verse has failed you in getting that job you wanted. All you remember is rejection. What you want, moving forward, are strong, effective, ‘memories’ and thoughts of acceptance. Part of past tense, if you will, following the Working. Focus on acceptance in the ECI Ritual. On success, which is after all, all you know. Dress for success. Be confident. You can even, if you wish, focus on yourself looking back at your success in your new career.
